Galloway's Record Round Of 69 At Mt Denby
The Whangarei professional golfer, Jim Calloway, breke the record for the Mt Denby course on Saturday, completing the 18 holes in 69. His card included five birdies. 12 bogeys, and he dropped only one stroke at the seventh. As the record performance was not registered on a medal round, how- j ever, it cannot be officially recognised j and A. C. Aplin's 70, established in i 1939. still stands at the official best. It has been the ambition of many J golfers, noth local and visiting, for | many years, to break 70 at Mt Denby, j and Galloway’s success was thoroughly j deserved. He has been playing with great con- j centration throughout the season and { his form has steadily improved until ; today he is counted among the first ‘ four in New Zealand, | The present Dominion professional i champion is Alex Murray, of Auckland, and the other leaders are Galloway. A. J. Shaw (Napier) and A. E. Guy (Auckland). Much interest will be taken in Gal- j loway's performance at the New Zea- | land championships in Palmerston | North in October. He is regarded as ! one of the strongest contenders for the j title. His third in the Victory tour- ' narnent at Hamilton last month showed j
that he was striking form befitting a player of the first flight.
At Mt. Denby lately, Galloway has been playing very steadily, hitting with confidencfe and accuracy. He is a pleasing stylist and is a very popular player. His outstanding performance on i Saturday was registered while play- | ing with another well-known golfing i personality, Dr H. F. Buckley. ; PAR FIGURES BEATEN | Galloway three-putted at the sevI enth, where he dropped a stroke cn j par, but this was his only slip during ! the round. | He sank an eight-footer at the ninth j and a 10-focter at the 13th for birdies. !
