Maoris' Theft Of Sheep And Turkey

(Special) KAIKOHE. This Day. Two hours after having been arrested at Pakotai by Constable J. F. Frain. five Pakotai Maoris stood in the Kaikohe Police Court before Messrs J. J. Bedggood and J. G. Ritchie. J.P.s. to answer changes of theft of a sheep and a turkey. The arrest was made at about 5 p.m. on Friday and the accused were heard by the two justices at 7 p.m. The sheep and turkey were the property of Irving Alexander. Pakotai storekeeper, for whom the Maoris had been doing labouring work. While they were woi'king for him and were camping on his property Alexander discovered the loss of the turkey which the Maoris admitted having killed and eaten.

After he had dismissed them, he discovered the skin and other remains of a sheep near their camp. The theft charge in connection with the turkey was withdrawn by leave of the court in respect of one of the Maoris, John Kelly. The others were convicted and discharged. The stolen sheep cost each of the accused as follows: —William Diamond, aged 30. fine £2. restitution 14/6: John Kelly, 22, fine £2/10/-. restitution 12/-, witnesses’ expenses 8/-; Peter Kelly, 20. fine £2. restitution 14/6, witnesses’ expenses 8/-; Hore Marsh, 18. fine £2, restitution 14/6. witnesses’ expenses 8/-; Henry Ashby. 22. fine £2/10/-, restitution 14/6, witnesses’ expenses 8/-.
