Floods Prevent Aid For Dying Child

When a young Maori boy was lying seriously ill at a house at Gpahi, 12 miles from Pipiwai, last week-end, flood waters surrounded the building I and his mother was unable to get in touch with a doctor. The child, Maru F-eepe. aged five months, died on Monday night and an inquest was conducted by the district coroner (Mr G. H. Morrish) at Pipiwai yesterday. He found that death had been caused by gastro enteritis. Gpahi is in the Kawakawa district, but as the road was impassable it was necessary to bring the deceased to Pipiwai. Cne cf eight children, the child became ill last Thursday and endeavours had been made to obtain a doctor, said his mother. Uru Maru Peepe, whose husband was working at Whangarei at the time. The child’s condition became worse at the week-end, but as the house was surrounded by flood water, witness had been unable to get in touch with the post ofilce at Pokere. and the child died on Monday night. Dr A. D. Warren, of Hikurangi, gave evidence that he had examined the deceased and. in his opinion, death was due to acute gascro enteritis.
