14th Century Iron
(Rec. 11.30 a.m.) LONDON. June 26. Iron and steel experts who inspected the famed 404 ft Salisbury Cathedral spire last month were amazed to find that unpainted wrought iron reinforcement, which was inserted in the spire when it was built in the 14th century, showed extremely slight and only superficial corrosion, but that wrought iron inserted in the 19th century rusted and required painting periodically for its protection. A consulting architect. Mr W. A. Forsyth, reporting on the condition of the spire, quoted these facts. He added that wrought iron inserted by Christopher Wren in the late 17th century also did not need attention. Eighteenth and 19th century iron was not only rusting but splitting the masonry.
