Not Opposed To 5-Days In Mines
(Rec. 1.30 p.m.) LONDON, June 2(1
The Government aid not object in principle to the introduction of a fiveday week in the mining industry, said the Minister of Fue: (Mr Shinwell), in the House of Commons, discussing the miners’ recent demands. He added that the Government had reached the conclusion that to get the increased coal supplies needed for expanding industrial production and domestic needs, it was essential lor more boys and men to be attracted voluntarily to the industry. Accordingly, he was considering steps to encourage recruitment. Mining engineers themselves regarded a fiveday week as desirable for the efficient working of modern mechanised mining. The question of introducing the five-day week was one for the industry itself and would be considered as soon as the Coal Industry Nationalisation Bill became law.
