Sharp Earthquake In South Island

(Special.) CHRISTCHURCH. Tins Day Sharp earthquakes were felt early this morning in Christchuurch and Dunedin.

The heaviest shake experienced in Christchurch for many years occurred at 12.34 o'clock, lasting several seconds.

It was not a sharp, violent shake, but rather one of a swaying motion, so that five minutes later light fittings in homes and buildings were still swinging. Its motion was from east to west.

No damage has been reported, but , the post office clock was disturbed, the chimes striking two and then three o'clock within several minutes of the quake. CONSIDERABLE ALARM Cne of the sharpest earthquakes felt in Dunedin for years occurred 35 minutes after midnight. In some neighbourhoods houses were perceptibly shaken and there were widespread awakenings and considerable alarm. Some quarters report a rumbling noise and accompanying tremors. No damage resulted. In Oamaru a ’quake occurred at 12.35 a.m. today. The direction was east-west arid its intensity was sufficiently violent to sway suspended objects and to shake dwellings. The tremors, two of which were very pronounced, lasted for about a minute. Although many people were alarmed by the occurrence no damage has been reported.
