Formal Business

(Special) WELLINGTON. This Day. After the reading of the Speech from the Throne, which occupied 37 minutes, members returned to the House of Representatives to transact formal business. The public galleries were crowded. Several petitions were presented and numerous committees of the House were set up. The only new member of the House. Mr H. Johnstone (Opposition—Raglan). was sworn in. being attended by the Opposition whips, Mr W. J. Broadfoot and Mr T. L. Macdonald. He shares a seat with Mr G. F. Sim (Opposition—Rotorua) in the back.row of the Opposition cross benches. There was a good attendance of members of the House. The only front-bencher absent from the Government was the Minister of Finance (Mr Nash), who is still abroad. The Minister of Mines (Mr Webb), who was absent during last session for health reasons, was present.

At a short sitting of the Legislative Council, four new members, Miss Mary Anderson (Greymouth), Mrs M. M. Breaver (Auckland), Mr W. Lee Martin (Hamilton), and Mr John Robertson (Masterton) were sworn in, and the Council adjourned until this afternoon.
