Russia Violates Potsdam Agreement

(1.30 p.m.) WASHINGTON. June 25. The acting Secretary of State (Mr Dean Acheson) told a Press conference that Russia flatly rejected the United States protest against the Russian expulsion of the Christian Science Monitor's correspondent. Mr Reuben Markham, from Rumania. Mr Acheson said the United States had registered objections, both in Moscow and Bucharest, unavailmgly. The Soviet Ministry of Foreign Affairs replied, contending that the American argument furnished no foundation for rescinding Soviet action against American pressmen. Mr Acheson pointed out that the Kremlin took this view despite the fact that suppression of news freedom violates the Potsdam Agreement.

Mr Markham had written stories on conditions in Rumania to which the Russians objected.
