New Industries Drain On Labour
(P.A.) WELLINGTON, This Day. New industries in New Zealand would drain labour from, the clothing j trade and accentuate the serious cloth-j ing shortage, said Mr S. Lawn, president of the New Zealand Retailers' Federation, today, Production in the first three months of this year showed a serious drop when compared with last year, mainly due to the shortage of operatives. Retail stocks of footwear showed a steady drop and there was no doubt 1 that the serious decline in the labour pool was mainly responsible, yet over the past few months tyre, carpet and linen thread factories were announced to be starting with a total labour demand of almost 2000 operatives, all at thf? expense of existing factories. The federation considered that the Government should concentrate on letting' established industries attain utmost production and use all available labour.
