Diphtheria Deaths A Great Tragedy
(P.A.) AUCKLAND, This Day. “A great tragedy” is the description given to the deaths of children in Auckland from diphtheria, by Dr J. Egerton Caughey, in an address today to the Junior Chamber of Commerce. Dr Caughey is one of the BMA committee of four which, in conjunction with the Health Department, is conducting an anti-diphtheria campaign. He states that from 1940 to 1944 there were 856 cases of diphtheria in Auckland, with 34 deaths, and it was notable that this year the figures are higher than ever. The deaths had all been of children between one and seven years.
This was a great tragedy and more tragic when it was realised that the cases and deaths could have been avoided had all children of the city been effectively immunised.
