BEAD KIWI IN FLOODS

Substantiating stories which have been told in the past by up-country farmers, a dead Kiwi was found yesterday in the screens at the river.intake for the Kerikeri electric-power generating plant. Kiwis are rare birds in the North now, although oldtimers recall the days when they were plentiful. Today, it is an event when even a dead one is seen. FIRST LAMBS BORN True to the tradition that it always arrives in the wettest of weather, the first lamb of the season has appeared at Waimate North. It was born on Friday when the rain was starting in earnest, and in the first few days of its life saw such a downpour as it may never see again in its brief period of existence on ihe green fields of Waimate North. MUSICAL APPRECIATION Judging by the enthusiastic reception given Miss Angela Parselles, the Greek soprano, at the Whangarei Town hall last night, visits to Whangarei by other touring overseas artists seems assured. Representatives of the company controlling Miss Parselles’ tour stated this morning that the evident appreciation of the recital provided every incentive for Whangarei to be included in future tours. DRIFTING LIFE RAFT A drifting life-raft, probably washed overboard from an overseas liner during the recent rough weather on the East Coast, lies as a potential danger to small craft sailing in Bream Bay. The raft, which is grey in colour, came ashore at Waipu early in the week. It was temporarily secured, but broke away in heavy seas. The Marine Department in Auckland stated yesterday that the raft was drifting near the entrance to the Whcngarei harbour.

Ladies have not been slow to take advantage of the “tip” about the prospects of an increase in sheets and pillow cases mentioned last week by Henry Wilson. There are so many sheets and pillow cases needed these days that a saving of V, per cent amounts to a considerable sum. To buy Wilson’s famous sheets at today’s price is to practically beat the market. r/wl
