Whangarei Bowling Club’s 60th Year

The 60th annual general meeting of tiie Whangarei Bowling Club. Inc., last night was very largely attended, the president, Mr A. M. England occupying the chair.

Votes of sympathy with the relatives of ths late Messrs C. H. Chissell. Ft. Frog ley, M. King, and P. H. Bourke were carried in siience.

Apologies for non-attendance were received from Messrs M. L. Staple and J. H. Marwick.

In the course of his review of the past season’s activities. Mr G. S. B. Morrison remarked on the good fortune of the club in having so much fine weather and in the excellent condition of the greens throughout the summer. He referred to the death of Mr C. H. Chissell, a foundation and life member who had been associated with the club for the past 60 years. MEMBERSHIP 175 The total membership as at May 31 was 175. made up of i 49 full playing members, 3 life, 2 returned soldiers, 2 exemptions, 1 amoutee. 3 country, 1 on active service, 2 honorary, and 16 associated. Mr Morrison considered tin's a very satisfactory state of affairs. The club competitions were wen by the following:—Champion singles. E. R. Woledge; champion pairs, G. W. Wilding, E. R. Woledge; handicap singles, T. E. Gillibrand; handicap pairs, A. Beaton. C. Lenne; percentage fours. J. Johnson, N. Gazzard, J. Gunthorpe, H. R. Collier; first and secondyear players. Stan Wilson. In inter-club competitions, Kensington successfully challenged for the Harvey Cup, the Swann and Hayes Cups were won from Hikurangi and the White Cup was annexed from Portland,

In the North Auckland champion singles, the club representative, E. Woledge, was not successful nor were G. Wilding and Woledge in the pairs. Forty-seven teams competed in the annual club tournament, representatives coming from as far distant as Cambridge and Hamilton A Helensville team, skipped by R. Wilson, was the winner. Wilding's team was run-ner-up. Mr Morrison remarked that all tournaments and competitions produced a credit balance. It was to the club's credit that there was not one unfinancial member.

Mr Morrison expressed his thanks to all members of the executive, club members, greenkeeper (Mr J. Johnston), green superintendent (Mr A. England), Kensington club for the use of its greens for the annual tournament and the Doel pairs, Mesdames Johnston and Macnay who did such a fine service in catering. The report, with the balance sheet which showed a very healthy financial position, was adopted NEW OFFICERS The following officers were elected: Patrons, Messrs F. Cutfdrth and R. H. Murphy; treasurer. Mr R. R. Roseman; delegates to North Auckland Bowling Centre, Messrs E. R. Woledge and J. H. Marwick: club coaches, Messrs T. Brewis. M. Whitelaw and E. Woledge; winter bowls committee. Messrs F. Cutforth and W. Calder; Sunday bowls committee. Messrs T. Weir. J. Lloyd, T. E. Gillibrand, F. Mogford, and J. Meaney; committee Messrs W. J. Crr, T. E. Gillibrand, D. J. Lloyd, D.

J. Thomson and F. Jones; secretary. Mr A. C. Rees. CLUB FOURS A vote of sympathy with Mr R. W. Whitehead, who is a patient in the Whangarei District Hospital, was passed at the instigation of Mr W. J Orr. Mr F. Farmer was of the opinion that the club should provide better afternoon teas for members and visitors during tournaments and club competitions.

It was pointed out that rationing had created difficulty, but Mr Englund promised to keep the matter before the committee.

An honorarium of four guineas was granted the auditor. Mi' J. A. Murphy. On the motion of Mr G. Wilding, ii was decided that club competitions this season be the same as last year, with the exception of percentage fours which are to be replaced by club fours, as graded.

The delay in completing the championship singles caused some discussion. but it was left to the match committee to bring down a scheme which it was hoped would enable the competition to bo completed well before the North Auckland Centre's championship events. SATURDAY MORNINGS A proposal that the club greens be opened for play as from nine o'clock cn Saturday mornings was agreed upon. Mr G. A. Melville voiced the desirability of having midweek domestic matches with the Kensington club each month, and suggested that the games get under way at five o'clock in the evenings, thus giving time for 21 heads. Interchange of visits could be arranged. His motion that such matches be organised was carried unanimously.

In the event of there being more than six first-year players in the club it was decided to hold a competition for them in addition to that for first and second-year players. A recommendation to the incoming committee by Mr H. Beehre that trophies replace orders as prizes for competitions was supported. Another recommendation, made by Mr L. Morton, that night bowls he in-

stituted, was also favoured. Votes of tlianks to Messrs E. Wood and J. Lloyd for services rendered the club on the social side, and to the chairman and the Press, concluded the meeting.
