May Re-Open Abandoned Mines

(Rec. 11 a.m.) LONDON, June 24 Extensive re-study on modern lines probably will reveal profitable mines among the many abandoned gold and other metal areas in the South Island, said Mr E. O. MacPherson. geological surveyor, in a paper presented to the Imperial Scientific Conference at Cambridge. In the fields of coal and gold prospecting more detailed studies of regions previously mapped, altered established geological views, increased mineral resources and provided a new approach to new discoveries. In future large-scale maps would be used and probably ore bodies and other mineral deposits would be discovered after geophysical surveys. ‘‘New Zealand is beginning to study its thermal regions with a view to using them,” said Mr. MacPherson.
