Saved 250 Tons, Miners Lost 4500
(Rec. 11.45 a.m.) SYDNEY, This Day. While power and transport restrictions in Sydney yesterday saved about 250 tons of coal, the three northern mines lost 4500 tons through strikes. Australia’s biggest mine, the Burwood. which produces 3000 tons daily, was idle because miners demanded an extra bus to the mine. Coal lost in strikes yesterday would have provided sufficient power to keep Sydney’s trams and electric trains running for three days. The Prime Minister (Mr Chiiley) conferred last night with union officials on tram and train restrictions. He told them that the Federal Government had already ordered an investigation into coal holdings in all states. Transport restrictions already in operation and those which commence next week-end are estimated to save about 1000 tons weekly. Though no immediate action as regards private users is contemplated, supply authorities say that additional electricity rationing is imperative and that gas rationing appears inevitable.
