May Cable 250,000 Words A Minute
LONDON. June 24. A machine capable of handling all Britain’s daily outgoing cable traffic in a few minutes was the subject of experiments by Mr J. L. Baird, the British television pioneer, just before his recent death. Cable and Wireless Ltd. has brought Mr Baird’s experiments near fruition and hopes to use the invention soon. The machine will pour out messages from Britain to the world at a rate of 250.000 words a minute, in contrast with the rate of 120 words a minute possible to existing machines. The invention photographs the messages, which are then transmitted on ultra-short waves through intermediate stations at a rate of 25 photographs a second.
