Communism Reviving In Japan
WASHINGTON, Jan. 2. Communism is being revived in Japan. This was reported to the War Department by General MacArthur in a lengthy survey of non-military activities in Japan and Korea. He added that many of the younger Japanese were questioning whether the salvation of their country lay in Democracy or Communism. The Communist Party has not yet been reconstituted, but has carried on a vigorous programme and its presence is keenly felt on the political scene. Party leaders indicate that it will carry on a “popular front’’ programme approaching the Socialist Party’s in many, respects. Its main objective is to break the financial oligarchy and establish a democratic Japan in accordance with the Potsdam Declaration. AFRAID TO SPEAK OUT
General MacArthur pointed out that the Japanese are completely inexperienced in democracy. • Millions of peasants and women in general are politically ignorant and furthermore, the real leaders are afraid to speak out, not knowing how long the United States troops will remain to protect them against the dreaded State police. Thus it will readily be understood why there have as yet been no significant political developments in Japan.
