Woman Stabbed In Auckland Street; Maori Arrested
(Special) AUCKLAND, This Day. A young Maori woman was stabbed .while crossing Quay Street near the ferry building yesterday afternoon.
She fell almost at the feet of a traf fic officer who was directing pedes trians across the road.
She is Helen Renata, aged about 20. A Maori. George Mita Renata, about 33. of Hardinge Street, was arrested on a charge of attempted murder. Several people saw the woman dasb across Quay Street followed by a Maori man. RAN ROUND OFFICER Sne ran round the traffic officer, and as she went behind him the man was seen to attack her with a knife. The traffic officer seized the man and he was taken to the Queen's Wharf police station. The police took possession of a wooden-handled knife. The woman was taken to the Auckland Hospital. Her condition is serious. RENATA IN HOSPITAL Renata did not appear when his name was called in the Police Court this morning. Senior-Detective Aplin said accused was not fit to appear in court, for he had been admitted to hospital after receiving medical attention in the cells tit the police station. He added that counsel for accused had agreed to a remand until January 14. Mr F. H. Levien, S.M., granted the remand. , It is understood that accused took an epileptic fit while in the cell this morning. A doctor was called and shortly after nine Renata was taken to hospital by ambulance. The condition of the woman, who is the wife of the accused, is still serious.
