Maunu School’s Fine Concert

The Maunw Hall was filled to capacity when the pupils of the Maunu School presented their concert. A varied and comprehensive programme was presented and the children gave a splendid performance.

The chairman of the school committee (Mr. G. Thorpe) awarded prizes, and with Mr Cyril Barge, thanked all who had helped. . The programme opened with choruses, “The Sun Has Got His Hat On” and “Keep On Hoping.” This was followed by a marching song, -‘We Don’t Want to March With the Infantry,” by the boys in sailor costume, those participating being Lewis Matthews, John Stirling, Noel Cameron, Brian Linnell, Colin .Thorpe and Joe Matthews. STORIES AND PLAYETTE . Then stories were told by Pat Coleman, Jeanette White, Colin Thorpe and Lewis Matthews. They were followed by the primers in the playette, ‘ The Silver Star,” the players being N.oel Cameron, Lovey' Whittaker, Anne White, Adfiahne Clarlison, Maureen Thorpe, Joy Scott-Davidson, Dawn Pemberton Briap Linnell, Lex Hayward, Bobby Shell and John Matthew. Another playette; “The Dream,” was staged by the same players. Zee Matthews then gave “Cockles and Mussels,” being- assisted in characters, Molly Malone (Betty Linnell), Father and Mother (Misses Eileen Matthews and June Stirling), and the Ghost (John Stirling). Miss Emma Leef, a former pupil of the school, appeared in hula costume and sang “Song of the Islands” and “Trade Winds.” A ballet dance presented by Pat Linnell and Pat Coleman followed.

The primers’ next playette was “King Cole,” and the senior girls, Eileen Matthews, June Thorpe, June Stirling, Pat Coleman, Pat Linnell and Joyce White presented a song and dance ensemble entitled “Mellow Moon.” PIANO SOLOS Piano solos by Adrianne Clarkson, Eileen Matthews and June Thorpe followed. The primers again appeared in action songs, “Annie . Goes” and “Let Us Trip the Light Fantastic.” A play entitled “The Vegetable Patch” was acted by the seniors: Joe Matthews (Mr. Biggs), Eileen Matthews (Mrs. Biggs), Pat Coleman (Mary Biggs), Pat Linnell (Cauliflower), June Stirling (Leek), John/ Stirling (Celery), Jean Crawford (Carrot), Joyce White (Carrot), June Thorpe (Turnip), Colin Thorpe (Onion), Lewis Malthew (Onion), Elva Cameron (Onion). Next was an item in which a fairy (Lovey Whittaker) floated across the sky to the accompaniment of the school choir singing “Silent Night.” The choir responded to encores with the singing of “Ash Grove,” “Santa Lucia” and “Cradle Song.” OTHER PLAYS

Next “Goldilocks” was presented, with stage effects by Joyce White, Gretchen Thrupp, Jean Crawford and Pat Coleman.

Other plays presented were “Princess Mousie.” “The Cobbler,” in which Tony Thrupp excelled as the cobbler, and “The Key Flower.” Pat Linnell and Eileen Matthews, with a chorus presented the musical number “Rose O’Grady,” and had to repeat. Then a number by the senior boys and girls, “Blind Sailor,” brought the musical portion to a close. The final farce entitled “The Ghost’’ was presented by Joe Matthews, John Stuffing and Eileen Matthews.
