Two Inter-Colonial Vessels Visited fort
During tha month ended August 14, the Whungarei Harbour Board’s pilot brought into the port two intercolonial vessels. Tliis information was contained in the monlhly report cf the engineer (Mr W. M. Fraser), to a meeting cf the board today. ’ The board’s employees had been engaged on handling ships’ cargoes to (lie average extent of three men working seven and a,-half hours on six days. July Shipping During July, 58 vessels entered and cleared the harbour, compared with 52 during the coresponding period of 1944. Registered tonnage of vessels entered and cleared, was 78C5, compared with a total of 7902 in July, 1944. Statement of imports and exports showed a decrease in the amount of potatoes landed at the Town Wharf. In July of this year 44% tons of potatoes were brought by cargcf vessels into the harbour against 55 tons during the corresponding period of the previous year. Highest tonnage of any commodity imported was coal, of which 2340 had been landed, against 1109Ui in July, 1944. Fourteen tons of manures had been imported, compared with only 9>/ 2 tons the previous year. A decrease in the amount of wines, spirits and ales imported was also shown. 115% tons being imported last month, against 134% tons for the same period last year. Export figures revealed that 33‘a tons of butter had been taken by boat from the harbour during July, against 40% tens during the coresponding month of 1944. A total of 8% tons of wool Had been exported, against 8 tons the previous year. Against 120 tons of lime exported in July, 1944, 110 1 2 tons of lime was despatched from the harbour last
