Commonwealth Control Of Building Materials
(11.50 a.m.) CANBERRA, This Day The Commonwealth will retain control over building materials while they are in short supply. This was decided at the Premiers’ Conference after the Minister for Post-war Reconstruction (Mr. Dedman) had delivered an ultimatum to the Premiers. Fie said that either the Commonwealth would retain control over allocations of materials in short supply, with the full backing of all States or the States themselves would have to take all responsibility for materials. The conference decided that each State would distribute within its own borders, materials allotted to it by the Commonwealth.
Mr. Dedman told the Premiers that m the year ending June 30, 1947, the target should be not less than 50,000 houses. In addition, priority public works would total £112,000,000, and private construction £315,000,000. In the next 12 months £50,000,000 worth of building materials would be Demands would exceed £100,000,000, of which the Government woyld require £24,000.000 for the 24,000 homes it proposes to build by June 30, 1946 (it has been estimated that the building of 24,000 houses by June 30. 1946, will leave a deficiency of 306,0001.
