(Rec. 1.30 p.m.) LONDON, Aug. 22. Manchurian forces recruited by the Japanese for the Kwantung Army have rebelled, says Reuter’s Moscow correspondent. The Commander-in-Chief of the Japanese forces in Manchuria after the surrender negotiations at Harbin, told Soviet correspondents that the creation ol Manchurian units was the biggest mistake. Correspondents said the Manchurians’ fear of the Japanese had now disappeared. Many Japanese troops and officials, with • their wives, were fleeing to Harbin in an attempt to save themselves from the fury of the Manchurian people. Harbin was now a city of jubilation. Red banners hang on all the main buildings. The populace halt trucks filled with Red Army troops and shower them with flowers. ■ The Red Army yesterday took 71,000 Japanese prisoners, including 20 generals. reports a Russian communique. Russian airborne troops landed at Port Arthur and Dairen and have begun disarming the garrisons. The Red Army south of Kamchatka landed on Shumushu Island, most northerly island of the Kurile Group, where the Japanese are laying down their arms.
