Bay Of Islands County Council

Kawakawa Riding

ME. G. M. McINTYRE.—Born at Waimate North—and living there ever since—Mr. George Mclntyre is farming in “the Whangae,” those rugged hills across the valley from Kawakawa. A past chairman of the Whangae School Committee and a member of the Farmers’ Union and Bay of Islands Acclimatisation Society, he is a son of the late Mr. J. P. Mclntyre. Fie is nominating for both county council and hospital board.

MR. JOHN T. McKEOWN— Succeding his brother-in-law, Mr. A. H. Morgan, as Kawakawa riding representative, Mr. Jack McKeown has spent three terms on the Bay County Council. He spent a total of 19 years on the Kawakawa Town Board, but is not re-nominating. Defeated at the last election, Mr. McKeown is determined to have another try at the Bay of Islands Hospital Board. He is a member of the Bay of Islands and Whangarei Racing Clubs.

MR. It. SNOWDEN.—Secretary of the Moerewa Freezing Workers’ Union and of the Bay of Islands Labour Re-' presentation Council, Mr. Robert Snowden is nominating for both the Bay County Council and Harbour Board. Fie was with the Railways Department for 17 years, but has been five years at “the works” now. Born in Kawakawa, he was secretary in 1926 of the West End Rowing Club. Auckland, and a playing member of tiie Akarana Golf Club, also of Athletic Football Club, Wellington.

MR. E. D. TAYLOR. —Born in Kawakawa. where he has lived all his life, Mr. E. D. Taylor is nominating for both the Bay County Council and Hospital Board. He is a newcomer io the local body arena. He stood . m the Kawakawa Town Board some years ago but was defeated by five votes. Mr. Taylor, until recently, has run a successful garage business in the town and is quarry-contracting for the railways at Kawiti. He is a member of the Bay and Waitangi Golf Clubs.

Kerikeri Riding

MR. 11. T. BATES.—Coming on to the council with the main objective of getting the “Bulls Road” put through from the Black Bridge to Kerikeri, Mr. Bates has seen this and other projects come to fruition in his 13 years’ tenure of office, during part of which he has occupied the post of deputy-chairman. He also spent about 12 years as a member of the Bay Plarbour Board until 1941. Mr. Bates was at one time president of the Kerikeri Settlers’ Association, of which he has been a member since its inception about 15 years ago. He was also president for many years of the Kerikeri-Waipapa branch of the Farmers’ Union, with 30 years’ membership.

MR. J. R. LYNESS.—A most unusual background of experience in local body government is brought to bear by Mr. J. R. Lyness, of Kerikeri. From 1914 to 1931 he was co-ordinating officer, or chief executive officer, of the Tientsin Municipal Council, China. In this post he controlled administration of two hospitals, two schools, police, water and electricity services. He came to New Zealand in 1931 and became an orehardist at Kerikeri the following year. As chairman of the Kerikeri Citrus Society, he was instrumental in having the citrus factory, which is working still, constructed in Kerikeri.

Mataraua Riding

MR. D. RINTOUL.—Three terms, aggregating nine years, without electoral opposition is the record of Mr. David Rintoul (Mataraua riding). He has spent around 25 years farming in the district. Chairman of the Mataraua School committee for nine or 10 years, he has an intimate knowledge of the riding he represents. Mr. Rintoul is a member of the Kaikohe and District R.S.A., and was at one time a member of the local Rehabilitation Committee.

Okaihau Riding

MR. SIMON CLARK.—Almost a legendary figure throughout the North, where he has spent something like 60 years in farming and butchering, Mr. Simon Clark is relatively u newcomer to the Bay County Council, where he represented Okaihau riding. He is a member of the Okaihau Chamber of Commerce, also of the Bay of Islands and Whangarei Racing Clubs. Mr. Clark played many historic games in the great days of the Hukerenui, Ohaeawai and Okaihau Rugby teams.

Pakaraka Riding (Returned Unopposed.) MR. C. F. JONES.—Mr. Jones will succeed Mr. S. W. Smith, M.P., who defeated him in 1931. Fie is nominating this year also for the Bay Hospital Board. Mr. Jones gave one term, ending 1931, to membership of the Bay Harbour Board. A member of the Farmers' Union himself, he is a son of Mr. J. W. Jones, of Pakaraka. who is president of the Bay of Islands Farmers’ Union sub-province. The younger Mr. Jones played Rugby football for Ohaeawai when that team had an unbeaten record for two seasons about 18 or 20 years ago. Fie has since been a Rugby Union delegate.

Russell Riding

MR. H. M. COOKSON.—A veteran of Kawakawa “politics,” Mr. H. M. Cookson is retiring chairman of the Bay Hospital Board, and is nominating again for both Hospital Board and County Council. He was a member when the two bodies were cojoined more than 20 years ago, and represented Russell riding for one term, ending 1941. His hospital board experience is longer and he succeeded Mr. FI. T. Atkinson as chairman three years ago. Fourteen years on the Kawakawa Town Board, the last eight as chairman, were concluded about seven years ago. In all he has spent more than 30 years in the Bay. farming and in business as an undertaker. Mr. Cookson was president of the Bay Sub-Provin-cial Farmers’ Union for two terms.

MR. J. R. MORRIS.—Three years on the Pay County Council and nine as Government nominee on the Bay Harbour Board, with about 30 years' experience as a storekeeper and farmer at Opua are the qualifications of Mr. J. R. Morris. Chairman of the Harbour Board for a period of five years, Mr. Morris ceased to be a member eight years ago. When he left it, the board was £4OOO in credit, in spite of depression. He has been associated with the Opua Domain Board since its inception in 1941. Tautoro Riding ME. G. H. McKENZIE.—In his 12 years as a Bay County councillor. Mr. Gordon McKenzie has seen 55 miles of metalled roads built in Tautoro riding and every settler provided with allweather access. Born in Whangarei County, he served three years in the last war and took up farming in Tautoro on demobilisation. Mr. McKenzie is nominating for the Bay Hospital Board, of which he was a member for nine years till 1941, also for the Bay Power Board, to which he was apoointed by the Bay County in place of the late Mr. A. E. Bisset earlier this year. He was one of the original committee responsible for reticulation.

MR. E. MORFETTE.—He has been a member of the Kaikohe Town Board for seven years, topping the poll at the last election. He has been a member of the Bay Power Board as Town Board nominee for the past two years. His many public activities include membership of the Kaikohe Patriotic Committee since its inception, founder and ex-chairman of the Kaikohe Businessmen’s Association, member of the Chamber of Commerce and District High School Committee, president of the Northland Racing Club, Polo Club and Boxing and Wrestling Associations, judge for the Bay of Islands Racing Club and committeeman of the local A. and P. Association,

Towai Riding (Returned Unopposed.)

MR. J. HAY. —Mr. Joseph Hay has been returned unopposed by Towai riding for the last two terms—six vears. For the same period he has been a director of the Hikurangi Coop. Dairy Company, Ltd., and has spent 12 years farming in the district. He was president of the local A. & P. Association for many years. In addition to his agricultural activities, Mr. Hay found time to act as 0.C., Bay of Islands Home Guard Battalion.

Waimate Riding (Returned Unopposed.) MR. H. T. ATKINSON. —Member of an old pioneering family of Waimate North. Mr. “Dick” Atkinson has been a Bay County councillor for nearly 20 years and chairman for the last nine years —with the exception of a year spent in military camp, mainly at Kaeo. He has been a similar time on the Bay Hospital Board and was chairman of that body for two years, resigning to go into the army. One of his bigger jobs this’war has been chairmanship since its inception of the Bay of Islands Inter-zone Patriotic Committee, which sits at Ohaeawai. A veteran of the last war, he was a vicepresident of the Bay R.S.A. about 20 years ago. He is today chairman of the Northern Rehabilitation Farm Committee and a member of the Farmers’ Union.
