Bombed-out Germans Now Total 8,000,000
NEW YORK, May 22
“There are 8,000,000 Germans homeless as a result of Allied bombings,” said General Arnold at a Press Conference. “However, beating the Germans will be a long hard job because they are ‘tough babies.’ “The general impression we have of the Japs is that they are using second or third string men. This may not be true when we get into the inner defences, but now they are not showing much light.” General Arnold pointed out that in construction Japanese homes might be flimsy, but factories are well constructed and he believed the task of reducing them by bombing would be as difficult as in Germany. Tokio official radio has announced that as a precautionary measure against air raids the Government has approved a plan for speedy decentralisation and dispersion of Tokio’s civilian facilities, including the transfer to safer areas of Government offices, hospitals, banks and various public and private organisations.
