Historic Burial Ground At Whangarei

A correspondent writes: “At the Parish Churchyard, Whangarei, are two memorial tombstones, one to Mr. and Mrs. Edouard Caflor. and cne to Tipone Haari, a high chief of Whangarei-Terenga-Paraoa. Both speak quietly to the visitor, and no doubt leave him or her wondering why these stalwarts should lie buried side by side. Edouard Cafler and his wife w'ere French, and it is interesting to relate their relationship. “Tipeno Haari was the benefactor of all the • early settlors in Whangarei, and through constant contacts with the missionaries of the day, was able by example to turn many of the Europeans from wrongliving and into leading decent lives in their newly-found spot. Moreover, the churchyard section is Maori property, and is still available, having been given by Tipene Haari for a mere song.”
