Whangarei County

(Four Required.)

MR. A. CLARKE. —Appointed to replace the late Mr. F. Elliott as a Whangarei County representative on the power board, Mr. Clarke has been a member of the county council for 13 years and deputy-chairman, and chairman of the finance committee. He has been a member of the Whangarei Hospital Board for eight years. In the sphere of schools he has been chairman of four committees for a period totalling 25 years, and is the county representative on the Air Port Board. He is trustee of the Whareora hall and church committee. He has been a director of the Whangarei Dairy Co., Ltd., since 1920. MR. ALLAN A, MAC KAY.—Born at Waipu and educated at the Whangarei High School and King’s College, Mr. Mac Kay has been farming for many years. He has been a member of the Whangarei Racing Club for eight years, and represented Whangarei at Rugby football for five years. Fie was one of the Northland tennis double championship pairs for three years. Mr. Mac Kay won a seat on the power board at the last election.

MR. J. A. S. MAC KAY.—Entering, public life at the age of 20 as a member of the Waipu North Road Board, Mr Mac Kay has had a lifetime association with local bodies. Wairua member on Whangarei County Council for 18 years, he was chairman for past nine years. A member of the Whangarei Hospital Board for the past 21 years, he has held the position of chairman for nine years. For eight years Mr Mac Kay has been one of three representatives elected for the North Island on the Hospital Boards’ Association executive. A member of the Power Board since its inception, and still a member of the executive, he was one of the committee which carried’out the preliminary load survey. Other positions held: Chairman, Waipu River Board for many years; a member Whangarei Airport Board; steward. Whangarei Racing Club, 35 years; chairman, North Auckland Counties’ Association; deputy-chair-man, Whangarei Patriotic Committee; member Board of Governors, Whangarei High School; member Marsden Licensing Committee until recently.

MR. DAVID McCARROLL.—After a brief period of retirement from many years of public activity, Mr. McCarroll is contesting a Beat on the North Auckland Power Board. Living at Paparoa and Mareretu, Mr. McCarroll was a member of the Otamatea County Council for 16 years, and for three years was acting-clerk and treasurer during the last war while the clerk was serving overseas. For 16 years lie was a member of the North Auckland Hospital Board and Marsden-Kaipara Hospital Board and then on the Kaipara Hospital Board. Mr. McCarroll came to Whangarei in 1921 when he was appointed Northland child welfare officer, retiring last year after 23 years’ constant service. MR. J. N. McCARROLL. —Present chairman of the board, he has been a member since the formation of the larger board, about 20 years ago. Mr. McCarroll was a member of the Whangarei Hospital Board for 12 years, and five years its chairman. He is a steward of the Whangarei Racing Club, and for years was on the committee of the Whangarei A. and P. Association. As Lieutenant-Colonel in command of the A.M.R. in the last war, he served for five years in all theatres, and was awarded the C.M.G.. D.S.O. and Bar. After returning to New Zealand he was promoted to the rank of colonel. He was honorary A.D.C. to Lord Bledisloe when the latter was GovernorGeneral of the Dominion. Southdown breeder and mixed farmer for years. MR. J. SCOTT - DAVlDSON.—Returned for the Manaia riding of the Whangarei County, Mr Scott-Davidson served on the Otamatea County for six years, being for a short time chairman of the finance committee. He was founder chairman of the recording Pig Council, and for the past nine years has been a member of the Auckland provincial executive of the N.Z. Farmers' Union. He is the Auckland provincial executive’s representative on the committee for the amalgamation of all primary producers into one union. For four years he was chairman of the Northern Wairoa Sub-Provincial Farmers' Union. Before taking up farming Mr Scott-Davidson was chairman of directors of Hikurangi co-operative coal mines. Until 18 years ago he was in public life in Scotland.

MR. RODNEY" COATES.—(See Otamatea County Council).

MR. W. COLLINS.—Has been a member of the board for the past nine years, and a member of the Kaipara Hospital Board for 15 years, with three years as chairman, an office he still holds. Mr Collins is a member of the Marsden Licensing Committee, which position he has held fdr six years. He is chairman of directors of the Waikiekie Lime Company. MR. VICTOR G. JUDD— Having been born in the Maungaturoto district Mr. Judd has been engaged in farming for over 30 years. He has been a director of the Maungaturoto Dairy Company for the past 18 years, and chairman for three years. He has identified himself with all district activities. MR. A. V. PAGE—A well-known Parahi farmer of many years’ standing. Mr. Page was appointed to the power board five years ago to succeed Mr. W. Betts, who resigned. He has been a member of the Otamatea County Council for the past six years, and for a similar period he was chairman of the late Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates’ election committee. MR. J. STERLING.—Born in the district, Mr. Sterling has had a lifelong experience in farming and is a well-known Jersey breeder. He has been for many years a director of the Maungaturoto Dairy Company, and chairman of the Matakohe School committee. There have been few activities in the district with which he has not been actively associated. (Continued next column)
