Australian To Command Australian Navy
SYDNEY, This Day
Captain J. A. Collins has been appointed Commodore. First Class, in command of the Australian naval squadron. He succeeds Rear-Admiral V. A. C. Crutchley, V.C., whose period of loan from the Royal Navv has expired. Captain Collins, who is 45, is the first graduate of the Royal Australian Naval College to attain the rank of Commodore, First Class. Ho also is the first Australian to have operational mmmand of the Royal Australian Navy. Captain Collins was commanding officer of the cruiser Shropshire, in recent actions against the Japanese at Arawe. Cape Gloucester, Admiralty Islands. He is most widely known as commander of the cruiser Sydney, whicli sank the Italian cruiser Bartolomeo Colleoni. in the Mediterranean in July, 1940.
