Predict Paper Shortage
WASHINGTON, January 21. A catastrophic paper shortage is predicted by the American Paper Pulp Association, unless the War Manpower Commission takes immediate steps to relieve the labour emergency in the pulpwood industry. The association's survey showed that cutting operations in certain sections were reduced 32 per cent, in 1943. In the long run, such curtailments were reflected in a comparable reduction in pulp production. The association pointed out that because the paper industry used 700,000 cords ol wood more than they received in 1943, inventories were critically reduced, and it was estimated that there would be a shortage of 3.000,000 tons of paper in 1944 unless remedial measures were inaugurated.
