WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

Kauri

The monthly meeting of the Kauri Womens’ Institute was held in the church vestry on February 2 with an excellent attendance. The meeting opened with the singing of "Comrades had Friends." Mrs Peat read the Creed.

The president. Mrs Ellis, welcomed two new members. Mrs Eric Ay ton and Mavis Galpin. The roll call was “biscuits made without sugar.” Mrs Peat took Ist prize and Mrs Nickol second. The best bloom was won by Mrs Jones, with Mrs Pear second and third. The trading rab!<* did a very brisk business.

A very pleasant time was spent sewing squares together for a patchwork, quill while a spelling competition was in progress.

The hostesses were Mrs Graham, snr and Mrs Harris.

Waipu

On Thursday evening, a social and dance was held in the hall in honour o£ Leading Aircraftman Trevor Peal. He was the recipient of many congratulations on account of his recent; engagement to Miss Heather Brooks, of Waipu. On behalf of the Waipu people, Mr B. Dunn handed Mr Peat a wallet, expressing the very best wishes of all. Tint second presentation, of a hold-all. was made by Mr Dunn, cn behalf of the Dargaville Patriotic Committee, for the Dargaville people. The families of both the airman’s parents are closely associated with that town. Pte. J. Young, on behalf of men in uniform, extended best wishes from all services, and Mr Alex Russell conveyed good wishes from the R.S.A. A welcome guest at this function was the airman's grandmother. Mrs Carr, of Dargaville. who is a’ life member of the R.S.A.

Miss Jean Russell rendered two pleasing musical numbers, with community chorus. Competition dances resulted in prizes for Mrs J. Sloane and her son, and Miss Olwyn Wright and Ray Vaile. The Weilsford orchestra provided music for dancing, and extras were contributed bv Mrs Hodsell. and also by Mr Sands and Mr Bruce Jonas (saxaphone). Mr J. R. Mackay was M.C.

Aflame Everywhere A fire which had a firm hold when the brigades arrived, completely gutted the premises of the Buoyant Chair Company. Ltd., Vermont Street. Ponronby, in the early hours of this morning. The first brigade found the building aflame from end to end. Three detachments of the Emergency Fire Service helped the firemen in the fight, but the building and contents were all destroyed.
