Ley In His Caps
LONDON, February 3
The German Labour front leader (Ley) is believed to have been drunk when he broadcast tonight from a German war factory.
A reporter at Reuter’s listening-post said: "Ley is known to have been drunk in the past when speaking, but tonight he sounded positively delirious. He banged the table with his fists and shouted at the top of his voice. Then he was heard muttering to himself. He repeated whole sentences two or three times. Evidently the strain of the past week has been too much for him." A correspondent of the British United Press says that Ley was drunk, if delivery of his speech as heard over the radio is any guide. He spoke strangely and often haltingly, often repeated himself, and finally worked himself into a state of frenzy. Ley called the Russians “these low Mongolians. We Germans will conquer them. Yesterday I had an incredibly happy experience, spending the whole day with our beloved Fuehrer. We can ask only one thing from fatetake any of us. myself, you, anyone, but preserve the health and strength of Adolf Hitler.” Nazi Party Given Reins A resolution passed at secret conferences of Gauleiters and Reich chiefs on Friday and Saturday, makes the Nazi Party the instrument for carrying out total mobilisation on the home front, says a German news agency message. The wish of the German people to participate actively in all branches of the coining total war found confirmation in the resolution. Hitler addressed Gauleiters and Reich chiefs on Saturday when at his invitation, they went to his headquarters. The announcement from Hitler’s headquarters says: •'ln an address delivered with the greatest determination and absolute confidence in victory, the Fuehrer lias expressed certainty that the severity of the times and the spirit of the German people arising therefrom, will give the nation gigantic strength and make it invincible."
German radio said that the Entire Berlin evening Press commented on the meetings. The “Lokalan Zeiger" said: “The Nazi Party with its far-reaching lira itches stretching' out into every single home and community, is best suited to load and set an example to the home front at the moment, when the nation is following the call of the serious hour for farther strengthening its efforts." The “Borson Zeitimg" commented: “The entire nation is iirml.v convinced that in this conflict of world historic importance, everything is at stake."
