Kaitaia D.H.S. Break-Up Ceremony

Although school “broke up” on Friday, Wednesday was the official ending of the school year lor, Forms 1 to 6 of the Kaitaia District Hich School. Following the usual custom, children of these forms, and some of the parents, gathered in the Princess Theatre, and, after various addresses, the cups, prizes and merit cards were presented. On the stage were the headmaster (Mr. A. W. Bird) and the secondary school staff, the chairman of the school committee (Mr. L. Pettit), Rev. Wilde, Mr. J. T. B. Taaffe (representing the town board), and other members of the committee and the parents' association.

Mr. Pettit spoke to the children of the school, as the committee saw it, of the attitude of the pupils when they left school, and the duty that was upon them to set a worthwhile examnie to those soon to follow them. He asked that they avoid the attitude of mind that asked payment for everything done, that they be ready and willing to serve their com-

munity in whatever way their ability lay. The headmaster gave his report of the year’s work, the results of which were highly gratifying. He spoke of the frequent changes of staff and the unsettling effect on the pupils. He welcomed back to the school some old punils who were now teachers, and paid tribute to those who had left during the year. He announced that, with a rise in grade, the primary school was now in the top grade. Rev. Wilde gave the address, and spoke of the part waiting to be played after the war by those growing up now. He stressed the importance of strength, not only physical, but spiritual and moral. Mr. J. T. B. Taaffe, before presenting the awards, also spoke to the children oh the part that awaited them in the future. He, stressed that it was not only the clever ones at school who were the successes later, and warned them that their education, far from ending when they left their school, was really only beginning. He complimented the school on the excellent behaviour of the children on the streets, and praised them for the good work done during the year. Awards were then made as follows:

Athletic cups: ‘Senior High School boy, Walter Matthews; junior High School boy, Clive Wagner; senior High School girl, Trixie Job; junior High School girl, Joan Price; senior primary boy, George Louden; junior primary boy. Henry Job; senior primary girl, Hilary Parker; junior primary girl, Caroline Torrie. Primary winning house: Tui. Primary football cup: Wcka. Secondary football cup: Kiwi. School Prizes Form VI.: Audrey Richards 1, Walter Matthews 2. Form V.A: Gordon Watson 1. Richard Perry 2. Form V.B: Josephine Matich 1, Olga Jurlina 2. Form IV.A; Betty Holder 1, Lyall Foley 2.
