Passenger Plane Attempted Landing On Sea Near Karamea
(P.A.) HOKITIKA. This Day A Dragon Fly twin-engined machine piloted by Flight-Lieut. A. C. Baines, of Christchurch, of the R.N Z.A.F.. on loan to Air Travel, left Hokitika aerodrome for Nelson at 8.25 a.m. Twenty minutes after passing Westport, a wireless was received from the plane; “One engine cut out.” a second message "Propeller missing," the next message said: “Will attempt landing in sea.” Captain Mercer said the position of the plane would be approximately Karamea Bight. Captain Mercer left in a Fox Moth machine piloted by PilotOfficer Oppenshaw. They carried a rubber beat and life-saving equipment from Hokitika.
The passengers were: Albert Johnson.. of Hokitika; A. Walters, of Haast; Mr. Hardy, of Haast, and Mr. Mcßride, of Westport. The latter was taken on at Westport. Two Air Force planes are out searching and the regular passenger plane was notified. She landed her passengers at Westport and went in search. She was piloted by Flight-Lieut. Lewis.
