Nursing Recruitment
More than 2000 nursing recruits are needed each year in our hospital training schools, and throughout New Zealand there is, at the moment, a recruiting campaign to interest young women in nursing as a profession.
The question: “What has nursing to offer me?” was answered by the president (Miss V. K. Hammond) and hon. secretary (Mrs. A. M. Woods) of the North Auckland Registered Nurses’ Association, when addressing the senior form at the Girls’ High School on December 11.
Miss Hammond, as matron of a training school, outlined the various conditions which need to be fulfilled before an intending entrant to the nursing profession may be accepted as a pupil nurse. The hours of work, scope of training and the salaries of pupil and trained nurses were all explained very carefully. Mrs. Woods dealt with the various occupations that nurses may take up after they have passed the final examination and become fully registered nurses. Each speaker was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. The visitors were entertained at morning tea by the teaching staff.
On December 12 a group of senior High School pupils was shown over the public hospital by Miss Hammond. In every ward something of interest awaited the girls. The X-ray room, laundry, kitchen and Nurses’ Home all were visited and very keen interest shown. Morning tea concluded the visit.
