U.S. Petrol Famine
(Rec. 11 a.m.) NEW YORK, Dec. 20. All private cars were forced off the roads for two days in 17 Eastern States because of petrol shortage. About 7,000,000 motorists and 80,000 dealers were affected. Mr. Roosevelt said the "crisis was caused by a “hurry-up” order from Africa for gasoline presumablys for the air force and armoured units, and the order could be filled faster by shipments from the east coast than Texas.
The Director of the Office for War Administration has announced that the ban on the sale of petrol will end tomorrow, but the value of petrol cards has been reduced from four to three gallons. A spokesman for the dealers claimed that the crisis was the fault of official carelessness. Only emergency use of benzine was allowed yesterday. Today essential services, police, sanitation and food delivery were maintained.
