U.S. Secret Gun Turned Tide Against Germans In Egypt
(Received 3 p.m.) NEW YORK, December 18
A correspondent of the Associated Press (Richard McMillan), who recently returned from Libya has been officially authorised to relate the story of an American secret weapon which .turned the tide against the Germans in Egypt. He says the Germans got the biggest surprise of the war along the E) Alamein front when big armourpiercing shells ripped and withered Panzer divisions. The American secret gun had gone into action for the first time. The German lines dissolved and retreated. They reformed at the rear and came back for mo v e. hardly believing that any weapon could be so destructive. Another Dose They got another dose of the same medicine. The enemy brought up heavy cannon and attempted to silence the new weapon, but were dismayed to find their shells falling short of the British positions. The American gun out-ranged the German artillery. The American gun can move more rapidly and its appearance is terrifying, particularly during night, as it gives off a vivid impressive flash. Mr McMillan says that the new gun was conceived by an American offiI cer, who sent a report on the weapons needed against Rommel. The officer recommended a high speed, self-propelling, hard-hitting, all purpose, long-range artillery piece. vjuick icesponse
A few months later new anti-tank guns began to arrive. They destroyed more panzer units than the tanks did. It is a smashing answer to the tank. In the words of soldiers who watched it. "it cut a swath through the Axis lines."
