The Convoy Got Through

ONCE again a British convoy has succeeded in carrying supplies and reinforcements, including all important fighter planes, to Malta, which has so long and valorously defied the enemy’s attempts to destroy Britain’s bastion in the Mediterranean. _ When the story of this convoy is told there will, it may be taken for granted, be unfolded facts which will add lustre to the glorious traditions of the British Navy. The enemy’s possession of the shores of the Mediterranean gives him tremendous advantage over the United Nations, whose ships are compelled to run the hazard of attack by shore-based planes in addition to surface and under-water craft. . The risks are formidable, but they have to be run. On this occasion they were of unusual magnitude, but the men of the British Navy did not flinch. They set out with determination to <ret the convoy through to its destination. And they did it. They did'not emerge scathless, but they dealt severely with enemy craft which challenged them. Other enemy ships, which evidently adopted “safety first” as their motto, turned tail and fled before they came within range of British guns. The story of their flight stands out in strong contrast to the deeds of those who have withstood the most terrific aerial bombardment to which any islanders have been subjected, and to those who have courageously faced death in order to get lelieving convoys through. ___
