Expects Reversion To Horse Cream Collection
(Special) KAITAIA, This Day. “The position concerning tyres for civilian and commercial use is so grave that unless very rapid strides are made in the manufacture of synthetic rubber there is no assurance that the coming dairying season will be completed without revolutionary changes in our methods of cream collection,” was the statement made by the chairman of the Kaitaia Dairy Company (Mr. E. R. Bird) when reviewing iransport in his report to the annual meeting. He visualised a compulsory return to horse-drawn vehicles and suggested that suppliers on by-roads might be called upon to assist by using these to act as feeder services.
“We can overcome the drawbacks,” said Mr. Bird, “but the shortage of blacksmiths and wheelwrights will be the greatest bother. “I have read many articles about the rubber situation and many of them are conflicting. “In the meantime, the costs of operating motor vehicles today are terrific. The few tyres that can be got are three times the price they were in 1937. benzine costs and alward wages are climbing and climbing. It is my own opinion that we could cart cream cheaper by horse. That is the cartage problem. But the time factor involved is another problem.”
