£1,283,000 Wagered On Totalisator During Holidays

'[Special to “Northern Advocate”] AUCKLAND, This Day.

Totalisator investments throughout the Dominion over the holiday period showed an increase of £137,451 as compared with the figures for last year. The total wagered at 21 meetings was £1,283,048 10/. Of this amount, Auckland contributed £602,957, an increase of £63,598 over the Ellerslie and Epsom aggregates last season, a rise of more than £9OOO a day. Only One Decrease.

There was a decrease in the return at only one centre, Waipukurau.

Last season this fixture was held at Hastings, and racing at the smaller town this season resulted in a drop. Of the £1,283,000 wagered, by no means all was returned to those who were lucky enough to back winners. Of all investments, approximately 17.25 per cent is deducted, and for the holiday period this amounted to more than £220,000. The Treasury takes a large proportion of this.
