Driller Killed At Oil-Boring Plant

[Special to “Northern Advocate’’} GISBORNE, This Day.

Struck by the shaft of a tool used in emergency work at the New Zealand Petroleum Company’s drilling site at Waikokopu, a young married man was killed instantly yesterday.

He was Mr. Walter Edward McAneney, 25, married, drill worker, 213 Clifford Street, Gisborne. The accident occurred during emergency operations at ground level over the well.

Mr. McAneney was engaged with others members of his shift in endeavouring to break a joint in the drilling column and had just completed part of this operation when the tension on the column caused the shank of a special tool to swing back with tremendous force. He was struck on the side and hurled some distance.
