Minister’s Letter To Kaikohe Chamber
“I note the resolution in regard to land settlement for the repatriation of soldiers when the war ends, but the matter of land settlement is not the only question that has to be considered in connection with repatriation.” This statement was contained in a letter from the Minister for Lands to the secretary of the Kaikohe Chamber of Commerce (Mr V. F. Cracknell). The Minister’s letter was a reply to a suggestion made by the chamber to develop land for soldiers before they return from the war. “A properly planned scheme is necessary covering the additional fields of forestry, prevention of erosion, stabilising of river courses, general public works, establishment of additional industries and other matters,” the letter continued. “The question is not one which can be dealt with in piecemeal fashion, and I can assure you that the Government has, for some months now, been exploring the possibilities of the formulation of a big scheme, in readiness, for the return of our soldiers,” it concluded.
