Queensland Miners Determined To Call Strike Off
(Received 3 p.m.) BRISBANE, This Day. Whatever decision is reached at the Canberra conference, it is understood that the vast majority of the Queensland coalminers are determined to call the strike off. It is authoritatively stated that within a fortnight, every coalminer in the State will be back at work. It is expected that almost every mine in the Rosewood district will be working today. The coal strike parley was not begun at 9 o’clock last night, owing to Mr Menzies being held up by another engagement elsewhere. Earlier advice was that an eleventhhour move to settle the coal strike would be made at Canberra last night, when a deputation from the miners, led by their officials and accompanied by the Leader of the Federal Opposition (Mr J. Curtin), would state their case to the Prime Minister (Mr R. G. Menzies), who expressed his willingness to hear it. This decision was the outcome of a second meeting of the miners’ leaders yesterday, who declined to give any indication as to what proposals the deputation will submit to Mr Menzies.
