Bay County Clerk Enlists
Leave of absence for the duration of Ihe war, or until such time as he is discharged, has been accorded the clerk of the Bay of Islands County Council (Mr J. L. Rayner). The first two months of his service are to be on full pay. In proposing the motion at the council meeting last week, Mr H. T. Atkinson stated that he felt that they were not handling their own money in the matter, but that over .and above his salary, Mr Rayner had done the county great service. Cr. Reed proposed an amendment that Mr Rayner be allowed half-salary for the duration of his service, but Cr. Bates objected, and the motion was carried, the amendment being lost for want of a seconder. On behalf of the councillors .and ratepayers, Mr Atkinson wished Mr Rayner the best of luck and a safe return, to which Mr Rayner replied. Mr Drage,. formerly assistant-clerk, who was appointed county clerk, will take over the secretaryship of the Bay Patriotic Committee in three months’ time when he has become accustomed to the running of the county.
