Big Crowds See Wellington Second Echelon Parade
[Per Press Association. Copyright .] WELLINGTON, This Day. / At Wellington there % was, if anything, a larger crowd* to see the march of the Second Echelon than was the case with the first. The whole route was lined with a dense mass of people of all ages. At Parliament Buildings the men were addressed by the GovernorGeneral (Lord Galway), the Prime Minister (Mr Fraser) arid Captain A. *E. Jackson, on behalf of former members of the Australian Imperial Force. Medals for Achilles Men. Lord Galway announced that he had been commanded by the King to present medals to four members of the crew of the Achilles for conspicuous service in the battle .with the pocket battleship Graf Spee off the River Plate. The recipients were SurgeonLieutenant Hunter, awarded the D.S.C.; Chief Petty-Officer Boniface, D.S.M.; Petty-Officer Maycock, D.S.M.; and Petty-Officer Hadon, D.S.M. Lord Galway said that the late Mr Savage’s statement, “Where Britain stands we stand,’’ would be tong remembered, and his words, “Unless we win all is lost,” were also true indeed, for unless we emerged victorious everything we held dear, our liberty and everything precious to us, would hang in the balance, if not be destroyed. Pictures N.Z. Under Nazis.
He drew a picture of what New Zealand would be like under a Nazi regime.
The cynical doctrine that if a country could not defend itself it was unfit to exist struck at the very roots of all internal law, but a country which could defend itself and failed to do so was a country that had lost its soul. Lord Galway made some reference to Italy, which, he said, might easily find herself playing the role of Little Red Riding Hood to the Hitler Wolf, which would be a tragedy and a disaster. He said all would follow the activities of the Second Echelon with the greatest interest, knowing full well that it would maintain and uphold the magnificent traditions of the New Zealand Division of 1914-18.
