Recruits Fill Gaps In Ranks At Inter-Camp Rugby
[Per Press Association. Copyright.] CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. A striking scene occurred at Lancaster Park on Saturday before the commencement of the Rugby match between teams from the Trentham and Burnham military camps. This was a parade of men of the Second Echelon. They were greeted with ringing cheers from all parts of the ground. Next the Burnham Camp Band played the teams on to the field, where they were inspected by the Officer Commanding the Southern District (Col. E. T. Rowllings). Massed bands played the National Anthem, in which the crowd joined. 10 Join In. Another stirring spectacle occurred during the interval, when non-com-missioned officers for the Third Echelon marched round the ground. Gaps were deliberately left in the ranks, so that any young man in the crowd who wished to join up could climb over the fence and do so. A call for recruits over the loud speaker was made, and immediately four strode across from the eastern stand. They were followed by six more from the eastern embankment, and within 10 minutes there were 22 recruits.
