Ladies’ Gardening Club

The Ladies’ Gardening Club held its fortnightly meeting at the Masonic Temple, Albert Street, on April 16. Mrs Webber presided over a good attendance, and welcomed several new members. Mrs Webber reported that" ten entries had been received for the Trad Fraser Cup competition that afternoon. The speakers for the afternoon were Mesdames Inkster, HarmanSmith and Given, the subject being “Talks on Judging.” Mrs Inkster spoke on judging with regard to children’s agricultural clubs. These, the speaker said, were under Government control, Mr J. H. Dennehy being supervisor. The great success of calf and sweet pea clubs had suggested extending the movement to vegetable growing, and carrot, cabbage and other vegetable clubs were being formed at the country schools. The vegetables, when grown and exhibited, will be sent to the soldiers’ camps. The speaker concluded her interesting address by describing points to be looked for in judging school exhibits. Mrs Harman-Smith next spoke on judging adult, competitions and enumerated ih detail the value of -marks awarded for, each of the special points essential for prize winning. Mrs Given then described judging the decorative section, especially stressing points to be made in staging posies of various kinds, button-holes for gentlemen, and sprays for ladies. The speakers were accorded a hearty vote of thanks for their interesting and instructive addresses. A floral hat parade was included in the programme, the hats worn by competitors being varied and becoming. Reference was made to the forthcoming Patriotic Floral Fete at the Town Hall and members were asked to assist in making it a success'. Afternoon tea was served, the hostesses being Mesdames J. G. Barclay, J. A. Brown, Fraser, Randall, Henderson and Shuell.
