Struggle to Control Situation. The Navy, Army, wharf police and Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to animals struggled to bring the situation under control. It is stated that almost every army officer with his name in the telephone book received offers of kittens for the soldiers. t One lady said she had a cat which she really valued, but which,-because ; £ he had been unable to help in the t country’s war effort, she would like to give it to the army. ; She made only one condition, 5 and that was that the cat should 1 be continued to be called by the name to which it was accustomed. , Army’s Fine Range. It is believed now that the flood of cats has been stemmed. The Army has a fine range from which to make a selection and the surplus is being firmly turned away. Yesterday the wharf police visited ’ the Admiralty Steps every now and ; again and turned away those who ; brought crates and parcels. ’ The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals also paid regular Visits to the waterfront, and saw that j no cats were left unattended.
