No Buggies Here When Mrs. Bell Arrived In 1875

The distinction of being the eldest person present at the reunion of Whangarei early settlers yesterday went to Mrs Sarah Bell, who is 92 years of age. She was born in Queen Street, Auckland, in 1847. What is now the busiest thoroughfare in New Zealand was unsaved, except for wooden planks for portioii of the footpath. In 1875 she married Mr Moses Bell, who since 1863 had been farming at Kauri, being the first to introduce sheep into that district. Went By Dray. “When you arrived here in 1875 did you travel to Kauri by buggy?” a reporter asked Mrs Bell yesterday. “Gracious, no. There wasn’t a buggy in Whangarei,” she replied, with a gleam in her eye. “We went by dray, and liked it.” Except for her eyesight, which troubles her at times, Mrs Bell is in good health, and at yesterday’s reunion there was not a tremor in her hand as she cut the cake.
