No Husbands For 1,631,000

More than a million and a half women in England and Wales cannot escape being spinsters.

There are not enough men for them. Statistics just released show that there are 1,631,000 more women than men in a total population of 41,215,000. There are more boys than girls up to 15 years of age. Over 15 females outnumber males. The 1,631.000 surplus women are concentrated mostly in the south-east of England. In Greater London there are 543,000 more women than men. There were 621,204 births last year. Tiie birth-rate was 15.1 per thousand. This was 0.2 more than in 1938. The death-rate was 11.6. Only deathrate lower than this was in 1930.
