St. Kilda Wins Quickstep

In spite of rain, 5000 people at Athletic Park on Saturday witnessed a brilliant military display, and quickstep concluding the New Zealand Centennial brass bands championship contest. More than 500 bandsmen, representing 23 bands, were on parade, and the standard of the music and the precision with which the marching manoeuvres were carried out were highly praised by the judges. St. Kilda Municipal, Dunedin, established itself as champion by winning the quickstep, having won the A grade championship in the test selection earlier in the week. Wanganui Garrison was second, and Auckland Artillery third. Drum Major F. B. Smyth, of the Auckland Band, won the medal for the highest number of points for marching. Nelson Garrison won the B grade, with Wellington Boys’ Institute second, and Christchurch Municipal third. The medal for the highest number of marching points in this grade was won by Drum Major H. A. Williams, Nelson Garrison. The C grade was won by Patea Municipal, with Wellington-West Coast Regimental Band second, and the Waipukurau Municipal third. DrumMajor J. Nairn, Patea, won the for the highest military points.
