OBITUARY
Mr Andrew C. Hawthorn
The death occurred in an Auckland hospital late yesterday afternoon of Mr Andrew Calderwood Hawthorn, 27. of Whangarei. Born in Lanarkshire, Scotland. Mr Hawthorn accompanied his family to New Zealand 16 years ago. Playing Rugby at Avondale School he injured a leg very severely and was a patient sufferer for the remainder of his life.
Despite his disability he took an active part in many organisations. He toll owed his brother James to Whangarei three years ago, and became a partner in the Hawthorn Glass Co.. Robert Street.
As secretary of the Whangarei and County Pipe Band he did n great deal to popularise national music in Northland.
From the time of its inception he took ,a keen interest in the Whangarc i Junior Chamber of Commerce, and until ill-health caused his resignation, was secretary to the Whangarei Centennial Sports Committee.
A. clover commercial artist, he also contributed a number of cartoons to the ' Northern Advocate." Mr Hawthorn had been in very poor health for the past 16 months. The funeral will take place at Waikumetc Cemetery at 2 p.m. on Friday afternoon.
