360 Men Transferred To Farm Work Scheme
f Special to “Northern Advocate ”] AUCKLAND, This Day.
During the past few months over 360 men in Auckland who were either drawing unemployment benefits or were on subsidised wages have been transferred to scheme 48, contract work.
Under this scheme contract labour is provided for improvement work on farms,* and at the present time is deemed to be of paramount importance ns a wartime measure to increase ). reduction.
Earning powers under Scheme 4B depend on speed, and it is stated that many men, over good intervals, have been earning from £5 to £6 a week. Among factors that are preventing any rapid extension cf the farm work scheme is one that farmers must provide suitable accommodation for workers. This is not always possible.
